What is sensory overload?

Your nervous system constantly receives information. Normally, your brain filters what's important. In autism, that filter works differently — more comes in, less gets filtered.

Sensory overload happens when input arrives faster than you can process it — like having 100 browser tabs open and crashing.

Signs of sensory overload
  • Everything feels 'too much' or 'too intense'
  • Difficulty concentrating or thinking
  • Getting irritated more quickly
  • Headaches, physical tension
  • Trouble speaking or finding words
  • Need to withdraw
Sensory overload often builds up gradually. You don't notice it directly, until you suddenly crash. Learning to recognize when you're approaching your limit is crucial.

Common triggers

  • Sound: background noise, overlapping voices
  • Light: fluorescent lighting, bright sun
  • Crowds: many people, busy spaces
  • Social: long conversations, groups
  • Cognitive: too many tasks, decisions
