The Dutch Autism Association in The Hague is holding an afternoon of games and crafts on July 25. It is a small local event, yet it shows what accessible peer contact can look like: there is a shared activity and conversation does not have to continue constantly. That may work better for some people than an open meetup built around social initiative.
Researchers examined records from one US health system between 2016 and 2024. After 2020, first recorded autism diagnoses rose mainly among female patients, while the trend for male patients remained stable or declined. The findings are consistent with improved recognition, but they do not establish a nationwide pattern: the data come from one health system and record the first diagnosis found there.
A Nature Communications study found different sleep-spindle patterns in mouse models and in sleep recordings from autistic children. Restoring this brain activity in the mouse experiments was associated with better social memory. The mechanism is worth further study, but it is not a treatment finding for people: the causal experiments were conducted in mice.
A town in Maine initially treated the large metal roosters outside a home and restaurant as advertising. For an autistic girl, they were familiar objects that helped with transitions and emotional regulation. The town eventually allowed two as an accommodation. Neighbours displayed the other roosters in solidarity, turning a local zoning dispute into a wider question about who is expected to prove that a need is real.
