Why rest doesn't work
One of the most frustrating things about burnout is that rest doesn't do what it's supposed to. You lie on the couch, you sleep, you do nothing. But you don't get better. Sometimes you even get worse, because the silence makes room for everything you've been pushing away.
That's because your nervous system is no longer regulating normally. It's not a matter of 'recharging'. Your system is stuck in a mode that doesn't return to baseline on its own. To understand why, you need to know a bit about how your nervous system works.
Three modes
Simply put, your autonomic nervous system has three modes. In reality it's more complex, but this model helps you understand what happens during burnout.
- Hyperactivation (sympathetic): you're 'on'. Alert, tense, reactive. Fight-or-flight. For autistic people this is the mode where lots of stimuli come in and your body is on high alert.
- Window of tolerance (ventral vagal): you can regulate. You can think, feel, respond. This is the zone where recovery is possible.
- Hypoactivation (dorsal vagal): you're 'off'. Flat, numb, frozen. Shutdown. Your body pulled the plug because the system was overloaded.
During burnout, most people alternate between hyper and hypo, with very little time in the middle. You go from tense to flat, from alert to dead-tired, without passing through that middle zone where you actually recover.
Why autistic burnout works differently
In a 'standard' burnout, the nervous system is overloaded by work or specific stressors. Remove the stressor and the system gradually comes back.
In autistic burnout, the stressor is broader. It's not just work. It's years of compensating on all fronts: sensory, social, cognitive, emotional. Everything at once, every day. That makes recovery broader and longer too.
People often say 'your battery is empty, you need to recharge'. But it's more like the battery has been damaged. It no longer charges fully. Only when the system feels safe enough to regulate again does real recovery begin. That takes time and safety, not just rest.
Recognizing where you are now
It helps to know which mode you're in at any given moment. Not to change it, but to understand why certain things do or don't work.
- Hyper: tense, irritable, poor sleep, racing thoughts, easily startled
- Window: you can think, you feel things, you're approachable
- Hypo: flat, tired, numb, difficulty talking, you can't really feel yourself
Many autistic people in burnout spend most of their time in hypo, with spikes into hyper. The window between them has gotten small. That's not your fault. That's what overload does to a nervous system that already has to work harder to regulate.
What this means in practice
When you're in hypo, 'just doing something' doesn't work. Your body isn't lazy, it's protecting itself. When you're in hyper, 'just relax' doesn't work. Your system is on high alert and can't come down without safety.
