Sound Sensitivity & Neighbors

When your neighbor's footsteps, music, or drilling aren't just annoying but physically painful — what helps.

Why it's different for you

  • Sounds aren't just loud, they're physical — you feel them in your body
  • Your brain can't filter background noise like others can
  • Once a sound triggers you, it's hard to focus on anything else
  • Unpredictable sounds (drilling, bass, footsteps) are worse than constant noise

What helps

Invest in sound insulation

Earplugs for the night (soft silicone), white noise machine, or thick curtains that dampen sound.

Talk to your neighbors — if you can

"Can you let me know when you're going to do construction? I'll plan something outside that day." Predictability helps.

Document structural disturbance

If it's extreme: note times and duration. Not to start a fight, but to make it discussable — or as evidence with the landlord.

Create a sound-free corner

One spot in your house that's as quiet as possible. With cushions, thick curtains, and headphones always ready.
